Richmond

Richmond (/ˈrɪtʃmənd/) is a coastal city, incorporated in the Canadian province ofBritish Columbia. Part of Metro Vancouver, its neighbouring communities are Vancouverand Burnaby to the north, New Westminster to the east, and Delta to the south, while theStrait of Georgia forms its western border. Richmond is the location of Vancouver International Airport, and the Richmond Olympic Oval was a site for speed-skating events during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Richmond's population as of January 2011 was 196,858.[3] It is the fourth largest city in British Columbia, after Vancouver (642,843), Surrey (462,345) and Burnaby (227,389).Richmond has an immigrant population of 60%, the highest in Canada.[4] More than half of its population is of Asian descent, many of whom immigrated in the early 1990s, mostly from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. Other Asian Canadians in Richmond include Indo-Canadians,Filipino Canadians and Japanese Canadians[5].Richmond's Japanese community has a long history in Steveston dating back to the 1800s. Following Japan's 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, this community was devastated as residents of Japanese decent were relocated to internment camps in the BC Interior and Alberta and their property sold at auction.
